Fencing Installation: Frequently Asked Questions

  1. When should a single brace or double brace be used?

If there are six wires or less-use a single brace.
If there are seven wires or more-use a double brace.

  2. How deep should brace posts be?

They must be four feet in the ground. If they are not placed with a hydraulic driver, concrete must be used.

  3. How deep must line posts be?

They must be 2-2 1/2 ft. in the ground. Since there is no pressure on these posts, holes may be hand dug and the soil tamped. No concrete is necessary unless a dip or rise condition exists.

  4. How many crimping sleeves should be used?

When the wire is wrapped onto itself, two crimping sleeves are required. When splicing wire, use three crimping sleeves.

  5. How far should the staples be driven?

Line wire staples must be driven in such a manner that the wire has freedom to move. Use only class 3 galvanized staples.

  6. How long will my fence last?

While high-tensile systems have lasted for over 50 years without rusting in the Southern Hemisphere, it is estimated, due to excessive acid rain, that the life span in North America is at least 30 years.
